I’ve heard time and time again from friends who hunt and guide that they often feel out of shape when hunting season rolls around. Many of the hunters they guide also mention feeling unprepared physically. And it makes sense—imagine coming from flatlands like Kansas or Texas (just to name a couple) and suddenly tackling Colorado’s rugged, high-altitude mountains. The altitude difference, challenging terrain, and the physical strain of packing out a harvest can catch anyone off guard.

Hunting is a physical sport—arguably one of the most demanding—especially for those who pursue it aggressively and with dedication. So why shouldn’t we prepare and train for it just like we do for other sports?

I’m working on creating a couple of different training programs to help backcountry hunters prepare for the season. Being in peak physical shape is crucial—not only to prevent injuries, fatigue, and altitude sickness but also to focus on what really matters: filling that hard-earned tag!

This project is currently in development, but my goal is to have a training program available by mid-summer to help backcountry hunters prepare for the upcoming season's demands.

The physical aspect of hunting is often overlooked—until you find yourself panting on the side of a mountain, realizing you didn’t prepare your body for the challenge.

Start training now so you can thrive later!
